Technical Advisor and Special Master Services
Joshua J. Yi serves as a technical advisor or special master on patent cases for federal judges nationwide. He has assisted courts on over 100 Markman hearings and several dozen dispositive motions. He has significant experience in all areas of electrical and computer engineering, including semiconductor devices and fabrication, signal processing and systems, analog circuit design, digital logic design, VLSI design, computer architecture, system-on-a-chip design, high-performance computing, low power design, reliable computing, simulation methodology, networking and network processor design, wired/wireless communications (e.g., DSL, 802.11, and LTE), display technology, operating systems, compilers, computer security, etc.
Dr. Yi graduated with BS, MS, and PhD degrees, all in electrical engineering, from the University of Minnesota. The focus of his bachelor’s degree was semiconductor physics, devices, and fabrication. The focus of his master’s degree was VLSI design, where his master’s project focused on hardware/software co-simulation. The focus of his PhD was computer architecture, where his dissertation focused on microarchitecture and statistically-rigorous simulation.
After graduating with his PhD, he worked for Freescale Semiconductor (now NXP) in Austin, TX for five years, where he primarily did microprocessor, embedded processor, and SoC design, performance analysis, and optimization work.
Dr. Yi has published over 30 peer-reviewed book chapters, articles, and papers in the field of computer architecture, where two of his papers won a best paper award. In addition, he co-founded two well-known international workshops—Workshop on Modeling, Benchmark, and Simulation and Workshop on Computer Architecture Research Directions. He also served on the organizing and program committees for various conferences and workshops; has been a peer-reviewer for several computer architecture conferences and journals; and was a co-guest editor of IEEE Micro. Finally, he co-wrote two successful research grant proposals worth approximately $500,000.
Dr. Yi graduated with a JD from the University of Texas and is admitted to practice in Texas and before the PTO. After graduating with his JD, he worked for Dechert LLP for seven years practicing patent litigation, where he participated in all aspects of patent litigation including infringement contentions, claim construction, discovery, expert reports, and dispositive motions, and had three jury trial verdicts.
Starting in August 2019, Dr. Yi clerked for the Honorable Alan D Albright in the Waco division of the Western District of Texas for 16 months, where he managed all of Judge Albright’s patent cases (approximately 800 to 1000 patent cases).
In 2021, Dr. Yi was appointed to the editorial board of IEEE Micro, which is IEEE’s flagship publication on computer architecture, and where he writes a column on patent analytics.
Dr. Yi uses his deep technical knowledge and legal experience in patent litigation to assist courts with claim construction, motions for summary judgment, Daubert motions, and trial-related issues.
